You’ve probably already seen Cloudways free trials, coupons, referral rewards, and promotional offers advertised as ways to reduce hosting costs. The important distinction is that a free trial, percentage discount, prepaid balance, and Cloudways hosting credit are not the same benefit. In this guide, I’ll explain the legitimate Cloudways free-credit routes available in 2026, who qualifies, when each credit becomes usable, and how to avoid outdated offers.

Last verified: August 9, 2026. Cloudways referral incentives, promotions, billing interfaces, and program availability can change, so monetary claims in this guide are based on current first-party Cloudways documentation. The editorial scope prioritizes legitimate credit routes and billing mechanics rather than generic coupon claims, consistent with the supplied content framework.

Key Takeaways

  • Cloudways hosting credits are account-based benefits that can reduce eligible hosting charges rather than cash payments made directly to you.
  • A new customer using an eligible Cloudways referral link currently receives $25 in hosting credit, with the credit becoming usable after the customer upgrades the account.
  • An existing upgraded Cloudways customer can earn $50 in hosting credit per successful referral after the referred customer spends at least $30 and pays at least two invoices.
  • Cloudways Flexible currently has a three-day free trial without a credit card, but the trial is platform access rather than a dollar-denominated hosting credit.
  • Cloudways-issued promotional and referral credits now appear under Billing → Credits & Discounts, while customer-funded prepayments are tracked separately.
  • Promotional credits currently expire one year after issuance, but you should verify the expiry shown for the specific credit rather than assuming every Cloudways program follows the same rule.
  • Cloudways Startup Program tiers advertise platform credits of up to $50,000, although new applications are temporarily closed as of August 9, 2026 and Cloudways is directing applicants to a waitlist.

What Are Cloudways Free Credits and How Do They Work?

Cloudways free credits are Cloudways-issued account credits that can reduce eligible Cloudways hosting invoices or services without being withdrawn as cash. Referral credits, signup-related promotional credits, and certain program credits are separate from money that you deposit yourself as a prepayment. Cloudways’ 2026 billing architecture explicitly separates these balances.

Cloudways hosting credits are therefore best understood as billing value, not free cash. For example, if an eligible $40 invoice receives a $25 promotional credit, the remaining eligible amount would be $15 before available prepayments or the saved payment method are considered.

Cloudways states that invoice settlement applies promotional discounts and credits before available prepayments. Any amount still outstanding can then be charged through the customer’s payment method.

Hosting credits are different from account funds

Cloudways account funds or prepayments are your own deposited money. Cloudways describes prepayments as funds added through supported payment methods or certain refunds, whereas Credits & Discounts contains Cloudways-issued benefits such as signup bonuses and referral rewards.

That distinction matters when calculating your real savings. A $100 prepayment does not make your hosting $100 cheaper because you supplied that money yourself. A genuine $25 promotional or referral credit can reduce the amount you otherwise need to pay.

Cloudways Copilot credits are not the same as hosting credits

Cloudways Copilot credits are product-usage credits rather than ordinary hosting-account credits. Cloudways’ current Copilot billing documentation states that included Copilot credits reset at the beginning of each billing cycle and do not roll over. They should not be confused with referral hosting credits that reduce eligible hosting charges.

This terminology distinction prevents a common mistake: seeing the word credits inside Cloudways and assuming every credit has the same monetary value, expiry rule, or billing purpose.

Why Do Cloudways Free Credits Matter?

Cloudways free credits matter because they can reduce the cash cost of starting or continuing Cloudways hosting when the relevant qualification requirements are satisfied. The value depends on the credit type: a new customer may benefit from a fixed referral credit, while an existing customer can accumulate hosting credits from successful referrals.

For a new customer, a fixed $25 referral credit can offset part of an early invoice. For an existing customer, multiple legitimate referrals can progressively reduce hosting costs because Cloudways does not publish a fixed numerical cap on the number of referrals, while retaining the right to reject fraudulent or spam-driven activity.

The practical value of a credit also depends on your actual hosting bill. A $25 credit represents a larger percentage saving on a small monthly invoice than on an account running several production servers and paid add-ons.

For a complete breakdown of base hosting costs, add-ons, and billing models, see my Cloudways pricing guide.

“Promotional credits expire 1 year from the date they are issued.”

— Syed Abuzar Mehdi, Cloudways Help Center author, How to Manage Your Cloudways Payments, 2026

Cloudways’ stated promotional-credit expiry makes using credits deliberately more important than merely accumulating them. Program-specific terms may differ, so the expiry shown under Credits & Discounts should be treated as the account-level source of truth.

How Can You Get Cloudways Free Credits in 2026?

You can currently obtain Cloudways free credits primarily through the Referral Program, qualifying Cloudways promotions, and specialized programs such as the Startup Program. The Referral Program provides the clearest evergreen route because Cloudways publishes specific benefits for both the referred customer and the existing customer making the referral.

Here is the current credit landscape at a glance:

Referral signup credit for new customers

A referred Cloudways customer currently receives $25 in hosting credit. Cloudways’ detailed Help Center documentation says the referred user receives the $25 credit when signing up and that the credit becomes usable after upgrading the account.

The upgrade requirement is important. Cloudways Flexible’s free trial can begin without a credit card, but upgrading from trial to full access requires adding a valid payment method for verification and future billing.

$50 referral reward for existing customers

An existing Cloudways customer with an upgraded account can earn $50 in hosting credit for each successful referral. The detailed referral requirements specify that the referred user must spend at least $30 and pay a minimum of two invoices before the referrer’s $50 reward becomes payable.

A trial-only account cannot participate as a referrer. Cloudways states that customers must upgrade before they can generate and use a referral link.

Promotional and event credits

Cloudways promotional credits are campaign-dependent account benefits rather than a permanent fixed signup entitlement. Cloudways’ billing documentation identifies signup bonuses and promotional rewards as examples of Credits & Discounts, but the value and eligibility depend on the specific campaign.

This is why old claims such as “lifetime $25 Cloudways credit” should not be treated as evergreen policy. Always verify a current promotion against Cloudways’ own terms before relying on the monetary value.

For percentage-based signup savings rather than hosting credits, compare the current Cloudways coupon and promo-code options and Cloudways discount code offers.

Cloudways Startup Program credits

Cloudways Startup Program currently advertises three credit tiers worth $15,000, $25,000, and $50,000, but new applications are temporarily closed. Cloudways is currently inviting interested startups to join its waitlist instead.

The program is not an ordinary consumer signup bonus. Published eligibility varies by startup stage, and Cloudways states that startups receiving the program benefit generally cannot simultaneously be using another Cloudways offer without discussing the situation with Cloudways.

[Insert image: Cloudways Startup Program page showing Build, Grow, Expand credit tiers and current waitlist notice | Alt text: “Compare Cloudways startup credits and eligibility tiers”]

Does Cloudways Still Give New Users a $25 Hosting Credit?

Yes, Cloudways currently gives an eligible referred customer $25 in hosting credit, but the benefit is tied to the Referral Program rather than being a universal automatic credit for every signup. The referred customer’s $25 credit becomes usable after the account is upgraded.

The safest process is:

  1. Use a legitimate eligible referral link.
  2. Create the new Cloudways account through that referral flow.
  3. Confirm that the account is properly associated with the referral.
  4. Use the free trial first if desired.
  5. Upgrade the account when ready.
  6. Check the account’s credit area after upgrading.

Cloudways’ public Referral Program page uses simplified marketing language around the $25 benefit, while the more detailed Help Center clarifies that the referred customer’s credit becomes usable after the upgrade. The detailed documentation is more useful when deciding exactly when the credit can offset charges.

A referral link and an affiliate link should also not be treated as interchangeable. Cloudways explicitly distinguishes its Referral Program, which rewards hosting credits, from its Affiliate Program, which is designed around monetary commissions.

If you simply want to evaluate Cloudways before committing, read the Cloudways free trial guide instead of assuming you need a credit immediately.

How Does the Cloudways $50 Referral Credit Work?

The Cloudways $50 referral credit rewards an upgraded Cloudways customer after a referred user completes the required billing milestones. A qualifying referral must spend at least $30 on Cloudways products and services and pay at least two invoices before the existing customer’s $50 hosting credit is issued.

The complete workflow is:

  1. Upgrade your Cloudways account. Trial-only users cannot participate as referrers.
  2. Open the referral area. Cloudways currently exposes a “Refer & Get $50” option.
  3. Copy your unique referral link.
  4. Share the link with a relevant prospective customer.
  5. The referred customer signs up and upgrades.
  6. The referred customer pays at least two invoices totaling at least $30 in qualifying spend.
  7. Cloudways adds the $50 referral reward when the qualification conditions are completed.

“You will receive $50 in hosting credit once the user you referred meets all of the following conditions:”

— Syed Abuzar Mehdi, Cloudways Help Center author, How to Refer a Customer to Cloudways, 2025

The important part comes after the headline reward: an upgrade alone is not sufficient for the referrer’s $50 credit under the detailed Help Center terms. Two paid invoices and at least $30 in spending are required.

Where can you find your Cloudways referral link?

Upgraded Cloudways customers can access their unique referral link from the referral area of the platform. Current Cloudways instructions identify the “Refer & Get $50” control as the entry point, after which you can copy the unique referral link or use available sharing options.

[Insert image: Cloudways Refer & Get $50 interface showing the unique referral link | Alt text: “Find Cloudways referral credit link in the dashboard”]

How should you share a Cloudways referral link?

Cloudways recommends sharing referral links in relevant, legitimate contexts rather than through spam-driven distribution. Its Help Center specifically suggests conversations with clients, professional contacts, teams, closed communities, and friends while warning against spammy public forums, coupon sites, and automated distribution that may lead to account penalties.

For an agency, a natural scenario could be recommending Cloudways to a client who needs their own hosting account. For a publisher, the Referral Program may be less suitable than Cloudways’ Affiliate Program when the objective is cash revenue instead of hosting-cost reduction.

Where Can You Find, Track, and Use Cloudways Credits?

Cloudways-issued promotional and referral credits should now be tracked primarily through Billing → Credits & Discounts, while referral progress can also be monitored in the dedicated Referral Dashboard. The April 2026 billing redesign separates Cloudways-provided credits from customer-funded prepayments for clearer accounting.

This is an important 2026 update because some Cloudways referral documentation still contains an older instruction directing customers to My Account → Funds. The newer billing documentation states that the old Funds information was split between Billing History for prepayments and Credits & Discounts for Cloudways-issued credits.

What can you see under Credits & Discounts?

The Credits & Discounts page shows Cloudways-issued promotional credits, referral credits, credit usage, applicable discount information, and available expiry details. Cloudways’ current billing documentation also states that qualifying credits are automatically applied to invoices.

You can use this area to answer practical questions such as:

  • How much credit remains?
  • Has a referral reward been added?
  • Has a promotional credit already been applied?
  • Does the displayed credit have an expiry date?
  • Which invoice consumed part of the credit?

[Insert image: Billing → Credits & Discounts showing a redacted promotional or referral credit balance, usage, and expiry details | Alt text: “Track Cloudways free credits in Credits and Discounts”]

What does the Referral Dashboard show?

The Cloudways Referral Dashboard is designed to track referral progress separately from final billing-credit usage. Cloudways states that the dashboard distinguishes expected, pending, and earned rewards and provides referral status information so users can see how close each referral is to qualification.

A practical troubleshooting workflow is therefore:

Referral Dashboard → confirm referral status → Billing → Credits & Discounts → confirm issued credit → Billing Overview/History → confirm invoice application.

[Insert image: Cloudways Referral Dashboard showing expected, pending, and earned rewards | Alt text: “Track Cloudways referral credit status and rewards”]

Can Cloudways Hosting Credits Pay Invoices and Add-Ons?

Yes, Cloudways states that referral hosting credits can be used toward hosting invoices and add-ons. The credits are account benefits rather than cash withdrawals, so their value is realized by reducing eligible Cloudways charges.

Cloudways’ billing system automatically applies relevant promotional credits and discounts before available prepayments are used. For example, a hypothetical eligible $40 invoice with a $25 applicable credit would leave $15 to be covered through prepayments or the normal payment method.

Hypothetical Eligible InvoiceAvailable CreditAmount Remaining Before Prepayment/Payment Method
$20$25$0, with unused credit subject to applicable credit rules
$40$25$15
$75$50$25
$100$50$50

These examples illustrate the billing mechanism rather than promising that every credit can be applied to every Cloudways charge. Always check the terms attached to the specific promotion or program.

For a more complete view of how hosting usage becomes an invoice, see the Cloudways pricing breakdown.

What Is the Difference Between Cloudways Credit, Free Trial, Promo Code, and Prepayment?

Cloudways credit, free trial access, promo-code discounts, and prepayments are four different cost mechanisms. Credits reduce eligible charges, the free trial provides temporary platform access, promo codes apply campaign-specific discounts, and prepayments represent money that the customer deposits toward future invoices.

Is the Cloudways free trial a free hosting credit?

No, the Cloudways Flexible free trial is not a standard dollar-denominated hosting credit. Cloudways currently describes it as three days of free trial access without a credit card, allowing users to test the platform before upgrading.

“At Cloudways, you can try out our Cloudways Flexible Trial completely free for three days, no credit card required.”

— Usama Zafar, Cloudways Help Center author, How To Subscribe Flexible Trial, 2025

The distinction matters because a trial gives you time on the platform, while a hosting credit gives you monetary account value that can offset eligible charges. Read the full Cloudways free trial explanation before choosing your signup route.

[Insert image: Cloudways Flexible signup screen showing the 3-day free-trial option | Alt text: “Start Cloudways free trial without a credit card”]

Is Cloudways credit the same as a promo code?

No, a Cloudways credit and a promo code use different billing mechanisms. Cloudways currently states that only one promo code can be active at a time, while the Credits & Discounts system separately tracks promotional credits and discounts.

The presence of both categories in the billing system does not prove that every referral credit can be stacked with every promotion. Exact compatibility should be verified against the terms of the specific promotion before signup.

Is Cloudways credit the same as prepayment?

No, Cloudways-issued credits are distinct from customer-funded prepayments. Cloudways applies promotional credits first when settling invoices and then uses available prepayment funds for the remaining eligible balance.

This distinction is useful for calculating true savings. If you deposit $50 and later use it to pay a $50 invoice, you have transferred your own money. If Cloudways applies a genuine $50 referral credit, the eligible hosting cost is reduced without you funding that $50 yourself.

→ Compare Cloudways Saving Options

Do Cloudways Free Credits Expire?

Some Cloudways credits expire, but you should not apply one universal expiration rule to every credit program. Cloudways’ current billing documentation explicitly states that promotional credits expire one year from issuance and that expiry information can be displayed within Credits & Discounts.

Referral, startup, campaign, and product-specific credits can have separate program terms. For example, the Startup Program’s own FAQ describes how its allocated platform credits are consumed according to the selected package, rather than presenting them simply as an ordinary one-year signup promotion.

The safest rule is:

  1. Open Billing → Credits & Discounts.
  2. Check the credit type.
  3. Check the displayed expiry date, if present.
  4. Review the program’s current official terms.
  5. Avoid relying on an old third-party article for expiry information.

Can You Combine Cloudways Credits With a Promo Code?

Cloudways does not provide enough universal documentation to conclude that every hosting credit can always be combined with every promo code. Cloudways confirms that only one promo code can be active at a time, but individual campaign terms can impose additional eligibility or stacking restrictions.

The correct decision is therefore promotion-specific, not universal.

For example, the Startup Program explicitly states that participants are generally eligible only when they are not already using another Cloudways offer, although Cloudways invites users to contact the company about individual cases.

Before signing up:

  • Identify the fixed-dollar value of the credit.
  • Calculate the expected dollar saving from the coupon.
  • Check whether the promotion permits another benefit.
  • Compare savings across the full promotional period.
  • Choose the route with the highest real saving rather than the largest headline percentage.

For current percentage-based offers, review my Cloudways coupon guide before deciding.

Why Has My Cloudways Referral Credit Not Appeared Yet?

A missing Cloudways referral credit usually means the referral has not yet completed every qualification step, the referral tracking failed, or the credit needs to be checked in the newer billing interface. The referrer’s $50 reward requires at least two paid invoices and $30 of qualifying spend by the referred customer.

Use this checklist:

  • Referrer account: Was it upgraded before participating?
  • Referral link: Did the new user actually sign up through the unique link?
  • Referee account: Has the referred user upgraded?
  • Invoice count: Have at least two invoices been paid?
  • Spend: Has the referred user spent at least $30?
  • Account status: Is the referred account still active?
  • Referral Dashboard: Does the reward show Expected, Pending, or Earned?
  • Credits & Discounts: Has the final credit been issued there?
  • Legacy navigation: Are you checking an old tutorial that still tells you to use Funds?

Cloudways states that cancelled referrals do not qualify. Cloudways also provides referral support through its support channels if the published conditions have been completed but the reward still has not appeared.

[Insert image: Redacted referral status alongside Billing → Credits & Discounts to demonstrate the troubleshooting workflow | Alt text: “Troubleshoot missing Cloudways referral credit”]

How Should You Track Cloudways Credits in Practice?

The best practical workflow is to separate referral qualification, account-credit tracking, and invoice settlement into three checks rather than treating them as one screen. Use the Referral Dashboard to monitor qualification, Credits & Discounts to verify issued Cloudways credits, and Billing Overview or Billing History to confirm how those credits affected charges.

Step 1: Check referral qualification

Open the Referral Dashboard and identify whether the reward is expected, pending, or earned. A pending $50 reward may simply mean the customer upgraded but has not yet completed the required billing milestones.

Step 2: Check issued credits

Open Billing → Credits & Discounts and review the credit amount, remaining balance, status, usage, and any displayed expiration information.

Step 3: Check the invoice impact

Review Billing Overview or Billing History to see how Cloudways applied discounts, credits, prepayments, and final payments. Cloudways’ current payment documentation shows credits and discounts as adjustments before the final payable amount.

Step 4: Keep evidence for disputes

For meaningful balances, save screenshots of:

  • Referral status
  • Referral user details
  • Credits & Discounts balance
  • Relevant paid invoices
  • Credit application on the invoice
  • Any expiry date displayed

This documentation creates a simple evidence trail if you need Cloudways support to investigate a missing or incorrectly applied reward.

Which Cloudways Saving Method Is Best for You?

The best Cloudways saving method depends on whether you are testing the platform, opening a new paid account, already paying for Cloudways, or applying through a specialized program. A free trial minimizes evaluation risk, referral credits provide fixed account value, and coupons can provide larger savings when the eligible invoice amount is high enough.

If Cloudways remains too expensive even after available savings, compare the best Cloudways alternatives instead of choosing a host solely because a promotion is available.

What Should You Do Next to Get the Best Cloudways Saving?

Your next step should be to identify your user type and compare the real dollar value of each eligible Cloudways benefit before creating or upgrading an account. A legitimate $25 credit can be useful, but a different current promotion may produce a larger total saving for a higher-spend account.

Use this sequence:

  1. Testing Cloudways only: Start with the Cloudways free trial.
  2. Wanting the $25 referral credit: Use a legitimate eligible referral signup route and confirm the current terms.
  3. Already paying for Cloudways: Generate your referral link and track qualifying referrals.
  4. Considering a coupon: Compare the fixed credit with the current Cloudways coupon.
  5. Running a startup: Monitor the Cloudways Startup Program waitlist while applications remain closed.
  6. Still unsure about cost: Use the Cloudways pricing guide to calculate your likely bill.
  7. Cloudways does not fit your budget or workflow: Review Cloudways alternatives.

The key is to optimize for total savings and fit, not simply the largest promotional number shown in an advertisement.

Conclusion

Cloudways free credits can legitimately reduce hosting costs, but the credit amount, qualification requirements, usability, and expiration depend on the program that issued them. As verified on August 9, 2026, a referred user can receive $25 in hosting credit after upgrading, while an upgraded existing customer can earn $50 after a qualifying referral pays at least two invoices and spends at least $30.

The strongest approach is to separate credit, trial, coupon, and prepayment before making a purchase decision. Check the current Cloudways terms, confirm that referral tracking is working, and use Billing → Credits & Discounts to verify what has actually reached your account.

A verified credit is valuable. An old “free hosting” claim from an expired campaign is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I withdraw Cloudways referral credits as cash?

No. Cloudways states that Referral Program rewards are hosting credits rather than cash payments. Customers seeking cash-based rewards should distinguish the Referral Program from the separate Cloudways Affiliate Program.

Can a Cloudways trial user generate a referral link?

No. Cloudways requires the customer to have an upgraded account before participating as a referrer. A trial account must be upgraded before the Referral Program becomes available.

Does the referred customer’s $25 credit require two paid invoices?

No. The two-invoice and $30-spend requirements apply to qualification for the referrer’s $50 reward. Cloudways separately states that the referred customer’s $25 becomes usable after that customer upgrades.

Can I post my Cloudways referral link on coupon sites?

Cloudways advises against spam-oriented referral distribution. Its Help Center specifically warns users not to publish referral links through spammy public forums, coupon sites, or automated channels because abusive referral activity can trigger account penalties.

Are Cloudways referral and affiliate programs the same?

No. The Cloudways Referral Program rewards qualifying activity with hosting credits, whereas the Cloudways Affiliate Program is designed around cash commissions. Choose the program according to whether you want to reduce your own hosting costs or generate affiliate income.

Does Cloudways automatically apply available credits?

Cloudways states that qualifying promotional credits and discounts are automatically applied during invoice settlement before available prepayment funds. The exact treatment of a program-specific credit should still be verified against that program’s terms.

Where should I look if an old tutorial tells me to open Funds?

Use the current billing interface first. Cloudways’ April 2026 billing redesign moved Cloudways-issued promotional and referral credits to Billing → Credits & Discounts, while customer-funded prepayments are recorded through the newer Billing History/Overview structure.

Are Cloudways Startup Program applications open now?

No. As verified on August 9, 2026, Cloudways says new Startup Program applications are temporarily closed and directs prospective applicants to join the waitlist. The program continues to advertise tiers with platform credits worth up to $50,000.
